Iowa was amid the states with the lowest uninsured rates as of 2014. Options for health insurance for Iowans have been expanded since the Affordable Care Act “Obamacare” has taken effect. Those individuals and families who purchase their own healthcare insurance benefits rather than receiving them from their employer my buy coverage on or away from the state’s exchange which is federally facilitated. Access for benefits through public programs like Medicaid and CHIP are available if they qualify.

Iowa – Affordable Care Act:

Upon the marketplace opening for business for the ACA “Affordable Care Act. Iowa formed a state federal partnership exchange intending on transitioning to the state based exchange for 2016.

The Health Insurance Marketplace Iowans purchase their health insurance plans from is sometimes referred to as the HIX. Some might be eligible for the income based financial assistance which helps with premium tax credits and cost sharing subsidies but these are only available if coverage is purchased through HIX.

Iowa – Medicaid Expansion:

Among the states, Iowa expanded Medicaid to single low-income adults who are in the age group between 19 and 64. The stat is required to make final eligibility determinations for any applicants in Iowa’s partnership model for Medicare expansion.

Most Medicaid members in Iowa enrolled in the IA Health link – managed care program. It is a program which gives health coverage via a Managed Care Organization.
