Historically Louisiana has had a high rate of uninsured along with many other states. Since the ACA “Affordable Care Act” came into effect this has expanded including many more options for coverage giving those living in the state access to benefits for individual and family health insurance.

You can purchase ACA compliant minimum essential coverage if you’re a Louisianian without job based health insurance. This can be done away from the state exchange or done with public programs like Medicaid and CHIP.

Louisiana – Affordable Care Act:

Louisiana’s health insurance exchange is operated by the federal government. Those who do purchase coverage on the Health Insurance marketplace; may be able to find help in lowering monthly premiums, out of pocket healthcare expenses; if eligible for the income based financial assistance.

Louisianan’s who don’t qualify for the premium tax credits and or cost sharing subsidies can consider healthcare planes that are sold in the private marketplace.

Louisianan’s consider other dental benefits or supplemental health plans, Medicare supplement plans, or short-term coverage. SHOP “Small Business Health Options Program is also available for employers that have 50 or lest full time employees.

Louisiana – Medicaid Expansion:

When the ACA took effect in 2014; Louisiana was one of the states that did not expand Medicaid to their low-income adults. More than 433,000 residents of Louisiana lacking in coverage for essential health care services now will now have coverage because of Medicaid expansion. Using your coverage is as important as having it to make your annual check-ups with your primary doctor and having prescription coverage as well as being covered for screenings and wellness visits.

CHIP

LaCHIP (Louisiana Children’s Health Insurance Program) is used to provide health coverage to the uninsured children up to 19 years of age. This is a no-cost health program.  It pays for doctor visits, hospital care, shots, prescription drugs, and more.
