Residents of North Carolina have a multitude of options for individuals and families to purchase a health care insurance plan under the Affordable Care Act. North Carolina residents without access to employer sponsored coverage may shop the private marketplace for health care plans using the federal marketplace exchange. Public health plans like CHIP and Medicaid are also made available to those individuals who qualify.
It was when the ACA “Affordable Care Act” had taken effect, requiring most Americans to purchase health care insurance, North Carolina chose to participate in the federally facilitated marketplace (this is also referred to as the federal exchange). Income based financial assistance which is made available for people who enroll in health plans through the health insurance exchange; these are ACA-compliant health plans. The assistance can help in lowering monthly premiums and the out of pocket healthcare expenses.

SHOP – Small Business Health Options Program – this is made available to employers who have 50 or less full-time employees allowing the business to offer health insurance through SHOP.
Qualifying for the program and receive benefits you must be a North Carolina state resident, permanent resident, legal alien, U.S. national, citizen that needs health care insurance assistance and who has a low or very low income. You also have to be either blind or pregnant or have a disability or have a family member in the household with a disability or be the one responsible for children that are under the age of 19, or be 65 years old or older.
CHIP; this is a part of North Carolina Medicaid provides medical assistance for children age 19 and younger. This is a free or low-cost health insurance plan. Services covered can include medical, eyeglasses, dental, and many other related healthcare services.
