If you don’t enroll in Obamacare in 2018, you’ll be fined 2.5% of your income or $695 per adult, whichever is higher.
January 1st basically ushered in the Obamacare era. People who had enrolled under Obamacare by December 7 and paid first premiums are now eligible for coverage. Coverage also commences for workers who have signed-up for new small-business plans courtesy of the market place. The coverage for people with existing plans also gets cancelled, i.e. if they had not received an extension or signed up for a replacement. Insurance companies are also prohibited from turning away patients with poor health or cancel agreements with patients who fall sick. Women with pre-existing conditions will no longer pay higher premiums. There is also a limit on how much insurance companies can charge senior citizens.
Obamacare Open enrollment ends on January 31, 2017. The end of open enrollment ushers in the individual mandate. The individual mandate means that people who have not purchased a health insurance policy will be fined. The penalty of 2017 per person is $95, the maximum for a family is $285. However, the Obama administration recently announced that persons with health insurance cancelled by Obamacare will not face the penalty, however a penalty will apply three months after January 31 in case they don’t enroll for a new health insurance policy.
